Kilimanjaro Stars cruised into quarters when Nurdin Bakari headed twice to steer the Mainland side into victory in their Senior Challenge Cup Group `A’ match against Burundi in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Nurdin headed home a Mrisho Ngasa cross in the 20th minute to score the first goal before adding the second in the 75th in the same style but using Shadrack Nsajigwa’s cross make the game end 2-0 at the National Stadium.
The team, trained by Jan Poulsen, have six points after hitting Somalia 3-0 and have qualified for the quarter finals.
The home boys lost 0-1 in the opening game against Zambia who top the group with seven points after winning two matches and one draw, against Burundi. Chipolopolo also hit Somalia 6-0 on Friday.
Meanwhile, Malawi and Ethiopia forced a goalless draw in the Group `C’ match which kicked off at 2pm yesterday.
Malawi drew 1-1 with defending champions Uganda on Friday and the yesterday’s results put them in contention for a place in the quarterfinals as they have collected five points.
Troubled Harambee Stars are today scheduled to play defending champions Uganda in what turns out to be a mere formality for the former.
Harambee Stars have certainly bowed out of the tournament after losing their first two matches to stay without a point whilst conceding five goals.
They lost 3-2 to Malawi in their opening match before going down 2-1 at the hands of Ethiopia.
Uganda are also fighting for qualification for the quarterfinals after collecting four points from two games.
