Tsh10milion (£4000) to any local athlete winning a medal in the Olympic Games (TOC)

The Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) shall award Sh10milion to any local athlete winning a medal in the Olympic Games to be held from July 27 to August 12 in London.

TOC Secretary-General Filbert Bayi said during a farewell party in Dar es Salaam on Friday that the aim of putting the amount at stake is to boost morale of the athletes in the global event.

Bayi said last time Tanzania won an Olympic medal was in 1980 when he won a silver medal in steeplechase and Suleiman Nyambui in 5000m.

The Deputy Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports Amos Makala urged the team to behave well and fight up to the last minute to make sure that they return home with medals.

The team is expected to leave for London today ahead of the event.

Marathon runners in the team are Samson Ramadhani, Mohamed Msindoki and Faustine Mussa. There are also Zakia Mrisho (5000m), Seleman Kidunda, (boxing) and Magdalena Moshi (swimming).
