Premier League – Senderos ‘loaned to Milan’

Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos has joined Milan on loan, according to reports in Italy.

The Italian sports dailies La Gazzetta dello Sport and Il Corriere dello Sport have both reported that the 23-year-old centre-back has joined the Rossoneri on a loan deal that will run until the end of the season, with the option of buying him outright at the end of that period.

Neither club have yet moved to confirm the deal, with Milan official Riccardo Colli quoted as saying: “The agencies here have reported that Senderos has joined but nothing is official.

“If a deal goes through in the next few days we will confirm as much on our official website.”

Despite his qualities, Senderos has never held down a regular starting place in Arsene Wenger’s side, and is behind captain William Gallas and Kolo Toure in the Gunners’ pecking order.

While there have been numerous good performances during his 115 Arsenal appearances, he is destined to be remembered for his costly lapses in concentration, such as those against Liverpool in last season’s Champions League quarter-final.

The recent arrival of former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre looks to have paved the way for Senderos to leave the club he joined from Servette in 2003.

Should the deal be completed, the Switzerland international will join another ex-Gunner, midfielder Mathieu Flamini, at the San Siro.

Other players to have left the Emirates Stadium this summer include midfielders Alexander Hleb (Barcelona) and Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos) and veteran goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.
