Argentina midfielder Mascherano was shown a second yellow card towards the end of the first half in a match that finished 3-0 to United.

With the score at 1-0, Mascherano ran towards referee Steve Bennett to remonstrate after team-mate Fernando Torres had himself been booked for dissent.

“The charge relates to his reaction towards referee Steve Bennett after being sent off against Manchester United on Sunday, March 23,” the FA stated.

“He has until 6pm tomorrow to respond. The case will be heard by a regulatory commission on Friday, April 4.

“Mascherano is currently serving a one-match suspension for the sending-off.”

Mascherano continued to argue with Bennett and had to be restrained by Liverpool players and manager Rafael Benitez before leaving the field of play and is expected to be hit with at least one more additional match on the sidelines.
