The squad was trimmed from 30 down to 23 ahead of next week’s games as Jermaine Jenas and Shaun Wright-Phillips, who scored in Capello’s England coaching debut against Switzerland, were both dropped.

Robinson replaces the injured Aston Villa keeper Carson as one of three goalkeepers in the squad, while West Ham defender Matthew Upson was also ruled out through injury.

The 28-year-old Robinson, who replaced David James as England’s first-choice keeper during the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign, was not included in Capello’s first England team against the Swiss.

He was dropped by Spurs coach Juande Ramos in January after a series of high-profile errors, but was brought back into the team’s fold after helping Spurs win the Carling Cup.

Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe, young Middlesbrough defender David Wheater, and Aston Villa duo Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young were also dropped.
