TOC finally takes Games team

Boxers who will represent Tanzania in the under-17 Commonwealth Games were yesterday expected to start residential training camp in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam.

The Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) Secretary-General, Filbert Bayi, said yesterday that the boxers were expected to report in the camp last evening.

Bayi said that costs of the camp would be met by TOC. “We also paid the costs when the team was in the off camp training at Temeke,“ Bayi said.

On his part, Athletics Tanzania (AT) Secretary-General Suleiman Nyambui said that the team would camp at Mwenge`s Jolly Hotel and train at DDC Hall at Mlalakuwa everyday.

He said athletes would report in the camp on September 15.

The boxers are Afidh Bamtula (48kg), Seleman Bamtula (60kg) and Daud Rashid (51kg). They will be trained by Willy Isangura.

Seven athletes who will join the boxers are Magdalena Onesmo, Faudhia Shaban, Neema Khamis, Mary Naali, Anna Nangwa, Adam Nangwa and Mwita.

The three boxers and seven runners will represent Tanzania in the Games to be held in Pune, India from October 18-19.

Last month, Tanzania athletes returned empty handed in the Beijing Olympic Games for what was termed as poor preparations.
